She always told us to pray in a
safe place: “bury yourselves under
wild thickets; drape in rosaries;
wrap in shawls; nestle with
watchdogs; cradle with kin — far
from harlots on street corners,
blackguards behind shadows,
harbingers in alleyways and
guttersnipes on trains,” — as if
God is a stranger to darkness and
Jesus only bled for heralds and saints.
